Autores ResumoA case of narcotic addiction in the newborn occurring at King George V Memorial Hospital for Mothers and Babies is described. A brief review of the literature is undertaken, and it is pointed out that little or nothing has been heard of this problem in Australia. It is suggested that as narcotic addiction is becoming an increasing problem among the younger generation in Australia, the withdrawal syndrome in the neonate may be seen more frequently in the future. An outline of the clinical picture is given, and the difficulty of diagnosis, if there is no history of addiction in the mother, is emphasized. Various forms of treatment are suggested, and the prognosis is outlined.
