Sociopolitical Dynamics in Russia

Resumo

The article is written on the basis of a survey of Moscow-based school leavers, conducted in June 1997. It describes and analyses some essential peculiarities of young people's opinion and behaviour, related to transition to the the professional future, attitude to military service, smoking, drinking, experimenting with drugs, and sexual experience. Notions of 15-17-year old Muscovites of professional success and prestige are in the main connected with the new economic relations they highly estimate the professions of lawyer, economist, and financier. The previously honoured mass intellectual professions of doctor, teacher, and engineer now do not attract young people. There are also gender-related differences in the opinions on social success girls are more practical and less ambitious in their preferences, a position of employee in a commercial firm of a bank is prestigious enough for them. Boys are attracted by occupations symbolising not only money but power as well, e.g., such as 'businessman', 'entrepreneur'. Military service is considered by almost half of the young people to be a dangerous and senseless occupation that should be escaped; they do not share the romantic and patriotic moods of older generations. However, 15-17-yearold girls are more conservative and rigid than boys of the same age, many of them feel positive about military service. Moscow school-leavers try to join the adult world with such behavioural patterns as smoking and drinking. In consumption of -cigarettes and alcohol, boys are ahead of girls, whereas in experimenting with drugs the sexual differences are almost invisible. Sexual experience of young Muscovites is basically limited to rare or occasional affairs (in it boys are also more mature), while the shares of girls and boys having a regular partner are approximately equal.
