Resumo300 indigent women outpatients (71%) or postpartum patients (29%) were sterilized by either laparoscopic cauterization (LC) or Falope ring (FR) under either general or local anesthesia. Average operating time for FR was 14 minutes under local and 12 minutes under general anesthesia; for LC time was 23 minutes under local and 15 minutes under general. 3 patients in the FR group became pregnant though 1 is believed to have been pregnant at the time of surgery and 2 postpartum FR women required laparotomy at the time of surgery to control hemorrhaging. 1 postpartum LC patient received bowel burns that later required bowel resection and drainage. The failure of the ring to prevent pregnancy is believed due to inadequate occlusion of the swollen postpartum tubes which are also believed to be the cause of the bleeding problem. Patient movement under local anesthesia is held responsible for the bowel burn. It is recommended that electrocuatery under general anesthesia be used for postpartum patients and that more study should be given to the Falope ring.
