Objective: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) combined to the Informant’s Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE) for the identification of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: 191 elderly subjects were assessed with the MMSE, and their informants with the IQCODE. Subjects were divided into 3 groups according to their cognitive state (Controls: n=67, MCI: n=65 and Dementia: n=59), which was ascertained by clinical and neuropsy-chological evaluation. The diagnostic accuracy of each test in the discrimination of diagnostic groups (MCI vs. Controls, MCI vs. Dementia and Dementia vs. Controls) was examined with the aid of ROC curves. We additionally verified if the combination of both tests would in-crease diagnostic accuracy for MCI and Control identification. Results: In the logistic regression analysis, the MMSE alone correctly classified 92.1% of patients with dementia. In the sub-sample of non-demented subjects, the MMSE, correctly, identified only 65.1% of the MCI patients. The combination of MMSE and the IQCODE scores did not increase the diagnostic accuracy in the identification of patients with MCI. Conclusion: The present data do not warrant the combination of the MMSE and the IQCODE as a sufficient diagnostic tool in the diagnostic screening for MCI.
