Resumo

Gastric phycomycosis was identified in a patient dying in acidosis with diabetes mellitus and nephropathy.Histological examination of the margins of a large gastric ulcer showed numerous branching nonseptate hyphae.Organisms were also found in the blood vessels of the liver.Phycomycosis with gastric involvement has rarely been described and appears to be a different entity from the classic rhinocerebral form of mucormycosis, since none of the reported gastric cases also had rhinocerebral or ocular involvement. All reported gastric cases have been associated with debilitating diseases.Acidosis and malnutrition appear to be the most important predisposing factors.Only 2 cases have been diagnosed antemortem.Treatment of the underlying disorder along with specific antifungal therapy is suggested. An increasing incidence of opportunistic infections appears to be a consequence of modem therapeutic techniques.
