Resumo

This article describes a course-management system, called ceilidh, which was developed for teaching computer programming. The core of the system is an automatic-assessment facility. Ceilidh includes extensive administration and progress monitoring facilities as well as support for other forms of assessment including short-answer marking. Ceilidh has been in use at Nottingham for three years and recently supported a programming class of 160 students. It is also currently at the core of a thirty five site UK national pilot funded under the UFC's Teaching and Learning Technology Programme (TLTP).
