ResumoThe man who first told me about the Major was a Negro jet pilot who flew me to the desert gunnery range from a nearby air base. The Air Force had assigned me to take some pictures of the jet gunnery ranges, and when I asked the name of the man who was in charge of the ranges, he began to talk about the Major. We were at 30,000 feet, and I was being lulled to sleep by the soft, even whistle inside the plane.
