Resumo

A new species of Crateromys is described from seven individuals, all of which were collected from the Mount Baloy-Mount Madja-as Range in western Panay, Philippines. The new species is compared with C. schadenbergi, the largest species in the genus and restricted to the highlands of northern Luzon, with C. paulus, the smallest in over-all proportions, from Ilin Island off the southwestern coast of Mindoro, and with C. australis, from Dinagat Island off the northeastern coast of Mindanao. The latter two species are known only from the holotypes. Notes on the behavior of five captive animals also are presented.
