Abstract At the 1993, UNESCO Conference in Brussels, Belgium, doctors from Asia, Europe, North and South America reported a dramatic increase over the last ten years in the number of children being treated for sexually transmitted diseases. One of the reasons cited for the escalation was that children and adolescents are in greater and greater demand as prostitutes because they are deemed more likely to be HIV negative or free of AIDS. Experts agreed that traditional taboos against the sexual exploitation of children have eroded because of a multibillion-dollar international sex industry featuring children in pornography, peep shows and on ‘sex tours’.1 Adult/child sexual relations have occurred throughout history with varying degrees of acceptability; however, the exploitation of children is judged harshly in almost all cultures.
