Resumo

Genetic affinities between several species or populations of the Aedes (Stg.) scutellaris group of mosquitoes were studied by comparison of insemination rates, fecundity, egg fertility, and larva-to-adult survival of parental and crossbred populations. Results indicated that 4 autogenous populations from Niue and the Tonga islands [Ae. cooki, Ae. tabu, Ae. sp. (Tafahi) and Ae. sp. (Niuafo'ou)] are closely related and belong to a single polymorphic species. They are specifically distinct from Ae. scutellaris malayensis, as well as from Ae. polynesiensis and Ae. pseudoscutellaris. However, they are more closely related to the latter 2 species than they are to Ae. s. malayensis. Genetic affinities are correlated with the geographic proximity of the origins of these experimental colonies.
