ResumoSUMMARY The relationships between forty-six samples of Nigerian high forest were assessed by principal components analysis of pre-exploitation enumeration data. Size differences existed between samples because each enumeration was originally an independent exercise. Data standardization was necessary prior to analysis. It was concluded that much of the forest variation was associated with soil differences and that a primary division of Nigerian high forest should be made according to the underlying soil-type -Ferrallitic or Ferruginous Tropical. Forest on Ferruginous Tropical Soils could be usefully sub-divided according to rainfall, but some allowance for other factors was needed. Forest on Ferrallitic Soils could be subdivided on a geographical basis, which mainly reflected the influence of factors other than rainfall. The relevance to management of the results is discussed in relation to plantation establishment and the regeneration of major indigenous economic timber species.
