Stilbazium iodide (Monopar), a pyridine derivative, given to groups of children on 3 consecutive days, was effective against Fasciolopsis buski, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and only moderately so against Ancylostoma duodenale. A single dose was very effective against Enterobius vermicularis. No serious side effects were encountered although nausea and vomiting were not uncommon among the children given the drug for 3 days. Recently a new series of pyridine derivatives was reported by Phillips et al. (1961) and Burrows et al. (1961). Swartzwelder et al. (1962) employed one of these compounds, stilbazium iodide, in preliminary clinical trials to determine its anthelmintic spectrum; they demonstrated that it has significant activity against infections with Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and Strongyloides stercoralis. They also reported that no reactions to the drug were detected and no significant changes occurred in urinalysis and hemograms. Since the effectiveness of stilbazium iodide against Fasciolopsis buski and Ancylostoma duodenale had not been demonstrated, the authors employed the drug to determine its anthelmintic activity against them and three other common parasites, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and Enterobius vermicularis, in Taiwan.
