ResumoThis book is a useful primer for those aiming to develop a broad understanding of the complex topography of protection in the Asia Pacific region. The editors make no claim to comprehensiveness, but rather ‘throw up a variety of issues from across the region’ (p. 2). The volume accomplishes this goal and its true strengths are its breadth and timeliness. In terms of breadth, this work provides an overview of key issues and trends in the region. For instance, Hunt and Errington observe that protection policy in the region is often guided by international alliances and internal political pressures. They also offer an overview of extant regional cooperation models like the Emergency Transit Agreement, the Regional Cooperation Model, and the Bali Process. Moreover, Reza notes that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' non-interference principle may hamper the region’s ability to reach consensus on a regional framework. In turn, Mathew, Billings and Kaur describe shifts of industrialized nations towards border security.
