Resumo

A study of 312 specimens of woolly monkeys and all known literature records reveals that the genus Lagothrix consists of two allopatric species, L. lagothricha , relatively widespread in the upper Amazonian basin and adjoining regions, and L. flavicauda (= hendeei Thomas), restricted to a pocket on the eastern slope of the Cordillera Central in northern Peru. Four races of L. lagothricha are recognized, as follows: L. l. lagothricha , uniformly brownish on head and body, distributed north of the Rio Amazonas and east of the Rio Napo; L. l. poeppigii , reddish brown with a contrastingly darker head, distributed west of the Río Napo and Rio Juruá; L. l. cana , olivaceous with a contrastingly darker head, distributed east of the Rio Juruá and south of the Rio Amazonas; L. l. lugens , ranging in color from uniformly pale silver-gray to blackish, distributed in Colombia along the eastern slope of the Cordillera Oriental and in the upper Río Magdalena basin. L. flavicauda , deep mahogany with a yellow-streaked tail and also distinguished by cranial characters, is monotypic. Information is given on dentition, breeding records and habits.
