The survey of the Austronesian languages of the Morobe District was carried out as part of a survey of the whole district. The results of the complete survey appeared in Languages of the Morobe District-New Guinea by Hooley and McElhanon (1970). When that paper was prepared the complete cognate comparisons were iot to hand, and only a tentative evaluation of the relationships of the Austronesian languages was possible. Now, with the complete counts available and after further research into the interpretation of the results, it is necessary to review and revise the conclusions which were suggested at that time with reference to the Austronesian languages.'
