
Motociclistas frente às demais vítimas de acidentes de trânsito no município de Maringá

ResumoEpidemiological characteristics will be provided regarding to motorcyclists involved in traffic accidents in Maringá, state of Paraná, Brazil. Four hundred and forty-six traffic victims attended by the Integrated System in Trauma and Emergence Attending (Siate – Sistema Integrado de Atendimento ao Trauma e Emergência) were analyzed, from February to March, 1999. Out of this total, 206 (46.19%) were motorcyclists, whereas the others (240) belonged to other categories. Results. Results showed that motorcyclists differed from the rest of the victims in age, position on the vehicle, type of accident, day period in which the traffic accident occurred and the clinic to where the traffic victim was taken. Motorcyclists in the ≥ 23 and <32 age group were the most frequent traffic victims. Number of female and male victims, respectively aged ≥32 and ≥50 was negligible. Whereas motorcycle passengers were less frequent victims than in other vehicles (38.38% and 61.62% respectively), motorcyclists were the most frequent victims in falls, reaching 60.32%. Motorcycle traffic accidents happened predominantly from Monday to Thursday, motorcyclists were more frequently involved in accidents that occurred between 12:00 pm and 5:59 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, besides being frequently involved in accidents that occurred in this same time interval, motorcyclists were also commonly injured between 6:00 pm and 11.59 pm. The number of motorcyclists carried to non-specialized hospitals was comparatively inferior to that of other traffic victims.
