Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) procedures were developed for the determination of a number of high octane components in gasoline such as methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE), benzene, toluene, and low molecular weight alcohols. These procedures all incorporate column backflushing to rapidly elute strongly retained gasoline components from the column. The MTBE procedure is faster and more precise than previously developed gas chromatographic (GC) methods and is currently employed as a routine method for this determination. Analysis times are on the order of 10 min while analysis precision is typically 1% relative or better. By extending the backflushing time, benzene and toluene can also be determined in the same analysis with high precision. Although the LC method for alcohols is not as widely applicable as a previously developed aqueous extraction/GC procedure, it provides a rapid, independent method to confirm GC results when these are in question.
