Resumo

SummaryThe effects of herbicide soil management systems and the application of N fertilizer on the quality of stored Cox’s Orange Pippin apples were studied. Quality was assessed by a sensory panel and by instrumental measurements of fruit firmness and colour. Alcohol-insoluble solids, pectin, sugar and malic acid were also determined. Results showed that, although the additional application of N and the use of herbicides to reduce competition from grass may increase yields and fruit size, they may also produce softer fruit with a greener background colour and a lower content of alcohol-insoluble solids.
