ResumoA new concept of holonic manufacturing system is proposed in order to overcome limitations of the autonomous decentralized manufacturing system concept and construct next generation of manufacturing systems. The concept proposed here is an extension of the concept of holon, which is proposed by A. Koestler 1967, from the point of view of autonomy and cooperation of a system element. Autonomous and cooperative behavior of the system is defined according to the structure of the manufacturing system, and other important properties such as self-similarity and encapsulation, are also defined. A new type of scheduling problem and a new information exchange method of holonic manufacturing system are introduced as examples.
