The analysis focused on pattern of moves and characteristics of living situations, in contrast to past research, which has focused on number of moves and time in care. Moves typically began at adolescence and formed a pattern characterized by a number of brief placements following each placement of longer duration and by increasingly shorter stays in increasingly restrictive settings. Moves resulted from the interaction between child and caregiver and could not be predicted by length of time in care or the child's characteristics. Placement disruption was reconceptualized as a pattern of moves in care reflecting alienation, and eventually mutual rejection, between children and caregivers. Suggestions for intervention targeted on the child-caregiver interaction are presented. This content is only available as a PDF.
