0. Introduction. When recent theories concerning the origins of the peoples of the Pacific are considered, the Morobe District of New Guinea becomes a critical area. Surprisingly, however, considering it was one of the first areas of the Territory to come under European influence, and that the town of Lae is its principal centre, its people and cultures are still little known. Further, the materials which are pertinent to the district are scattered in many publications and journals often difficult of access. This paper therefore aims to collect in one place the pertinent references and also to provide an evaluation of what is available. Suggestions will also be made as to the aspects of our knowledge of the area most urgently needing systematic study and improvement.
