Autores ResumoThis monument is a good representative of Eclectism and of the time when it was built. It is well situated as regards its relations to the Place Royale and its neighbourhood, and yet this situation also prevented any communication with the lower town. Its plan provides very little convenience and a large part of the space it offers is reserved for pomp and display. It shows also a definite sense of dramatic effect and colourfulness in its higher structures, in spite of a certain heaviness of the whole. This monument played an important part in the struggle for influence which opposed the Church and the liberals. It may also seem a symbol of an authoritarian Justice and one understands why its awe-inspiring masses fascinated Hitler.
