Resumo

Over a decade has passed since Heinrich B611's Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum was published in the Federal Republic of Germany and subsequently produced for the American market by McGraw-Hill. While numerous articles have discussed the direct impact of B61l's work,' relatively little attention has been focused on its reception in the United States. This reception has continued in rather diverse formats, as indicated by the production of a television film adaptation, entitled Lost Honor of Kathryn Beck, starring Marlo Thomas and Kris Kristofferson, (broadcast January 24, 1984). The reception of Katharina Blum in the USA exemplifies the complexity of literary reception in a cross-cultural context as well as a complex network of functional and structural relationships in the literary marketplace. An analysis of: 1) the marketing and presentation of The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum by McGraw-Hill, 2) book reviews in the major national print media, 3) a magazine condensation in Redbook magazine and 4) reviews of movie and television adaptations will provide some indices in an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of literary communication in a cross-cultural context.
