Resumo

Examination of the syntypes of Pteraclisfasciatus Borodin, 1930 (MCZ 32120), shows that they do not belong to the genus Pteraclis and, indeed, are not even a species of Bramidae. The syntypes are both unquestionably members of the superficially similar family Caristiidae. Borodin's (1930) placement of a caristiid in Pteraclis is not novel, since Caristius macropus (Bellotti, 1903) was originally described in Pteraclis as well. Pteraclis comprises the only group of bramids having the dorsal origin situated before or above the eye, which characterizes all species of Caristiidae. Borodin's specimens have 34 dorsal elements (not 37 as originally reported), which is far fewer than the 48 or more dorsal
