Resumo(3) One know Max Havelaar, but the other works of Multatuli are less well known. L. Roelandt, who has translated a large number of French works into Dutch and Dutch works into French (notably the translation of Max Havelaar, Paris. 1968) offers us here some of the little known theoretical texts of Multatuli, relative to the famous Cultuurstelsel or "System of Cultures" set up by the Dutch administration in Java beginning in 1830. Multatuli does not present himself as an anti-colonialist, to the contrary, he even accept the principal of forcée et soulignée cultures, and interesting fact: the "system" is not a Dutch innovation but the legalization of a pre-existing Javanese system.
