Resumoaspect of a much larger problem, that of destructiveness and aggression in general. He was inclined to regard all destructiveness as a manifestation, of a hypothetical death instinct.4 In keeping with this central idea he came to interpret all failure in adjustment to life-neurotic failure, psychotic failure, active or passive self-destruction, focal or total suicide-as being intimately related.
