Background: An institution-based lifestyle intervention program for morbidly obese patients in the Helse Vest area was founded in 2005.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate long-term effects of the program.Method: 48 patients participated in a 40-week program that was a cooperative effort between Ebeltoft Kurcenter in Denmark and the Red Cross Haugland Rehabilitation Center in Fjaler (16 weeks at each institution with an eight week break in between).Participants engaged in daily physical activity and were provided with a healthy diet and emotional support.Follow-up data was collected through telephone interviews in 2011. Results:We evaluated 41 patients for primary event (bariatric surgery or not) and 38 for secondary events (weight change, obesity-related diseases, self-reported health and job status).33 of 41 had either undergone surgery (28) or were scheduled for surgery (5).Operated patients showed a significant improvement in BMI, self-rated health, comorbidities and work participation, while patients that had not had surgery only showed a significant fall in BMI.Conclusion: 80 % of patients had either undergone or were scheduled for bariatric surgery.Lifestyle intervention resulted in significant changes in BMI with no significant changes in other areas.
