ResumoThe protocol described is being used in the Grady Memorial Hospital laboratory to evaluate and report RBC abnormalities in peripheral blood smears. After scanning the data of the hematology profile, the technologist selects a suitable oil immersion field (OIF) containing between 200 and 250 red blood cells. If the morphology is normal in this field and in four additional fields, the peripheral blood smear is reported as “normochromic-normocytic.” If abnormal RBCs are seen, each type is counted or estimated as a percentage; certain changes, such as crenation, are not quantitated. The abnormal findings are reconfirmed in four additional OlFs before reporting. Reference values for the rare abnormal RBC found in healthy controls were established by the authors. Furthermore, 180 anemia patients were studied, correlating RBC abnormalities in peripheral blood with disease categories.
