Resumo

In her cogent and inspiring book, Situating the Self Seyla Benhabib endorses the basic outlines of Habermas's discourse ethics.1 She argues with Habermas that modem universalist norms of egalitarian reciprocity make those norms embedded in everyday speech explicit. She follows him in seeking to construct an account of relations of moral respect as arising from dialogue in which persons aim to reach understanding. However, Benhabib incorporates feminist and postmodern criticisms of Habermas into her formulations of discourse ethics. Habermas
