ResumoT HE life of Elliott Coues is a story of repeated triumphs. As a young medical student in the early 186o's he received national attention for his papers on American waterfowl. From 1863 to 1881 he served as a military surgeon, and during part of that period he was secretary and naturalist to F. V. Hayden's United States Geological and Geographical Survey. While braving hostile Indians in Arizona and blizzards in Dakota, he made an international reputation not only in ornithology, but also in mammalogy and herpetology. After resigning his commission, hundreds of books and articles continued to flow from his pen. During his lifetime many naturalists acclaimed him as the greatest American ornithologist since Audubon.
