Resumo

Hyalomma ticks characteristic of the Indian Subregion either do not occur in Afghanistan or (H. marginatum isaaci new comb.; H. kumari) are rare there. Species of the Turanian area (H. schulzei, H. marginatum turanicum) average the same size in Iran and Afghanistan. Species that range into this country from northern Africa and western and central Asia ( H. a. asiaticum, H. dromedarii, H. detritum, H. a. antatolicum, H. anatolicum excavatum, H. impeltatum, H. aegyptium) tend to be smaller in size than specimens from samples to the north and west of Afghanistan. Details of this Hyalomma fauna remain very poorly known. Data for all available Afghanistan collections are collated, together with notes on identification. While steady progress is being made in determining basic outlines of the Hyalomma tick fauna of the Near and Middle East and Russia, as well as of India and Pakistan, information from Afghanistan remains scanty. Available evidence suggests the affinity of hyalommas in Russia, Afghanistan, Iran, and North Africa and wide difference between hyalommas of this entire region and those of Pakistan and India. The present report, an attempt both to bridge the gap between the better-known areas to the west, north, and east of Afghanistan and to encourage further investigation in this country, is preliminary to a more extensive study on the Hyalomma ticks of India, Pakistan, and Ceylon (Kaiser and Hoogstraal, in press). For materials on which this survey is based we are grateful to Dr. George Anastos of the University of Maryland, who generously donated the specimens remaining in his collection on which his previous Afghanistan reports were based. Dr. W. W. G. Buttiker of Basel and Dr. W. H. Stephens, Veterinarian of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, sent specimens, and others were purchased from commercial collectors passing through the area.
