ResumoTo verify the effectiveness of methods for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is to be compared with the standard method, PenmanMonteith, who needs data on temperature and air humidity, solar radiation and wind speed. However, farmers do not always have such data, recommending the use of simpler methods. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of some empirical equations of ETo based on air temperature in relation to Penman-Monteith in Aquidauana-MS. We used climatic variables obtained through the network of stations of the National Meteorological Institute, located in Aquidauana between January 2009 and December 2010. To compare the values of ETo estimated by the empirical equation with the standard method, were considered the parameters of the regression equation (a and b), the coefficient of determination (r²), the index of agreement (d) and índex of performance (c). The empirical models evaluated based on air temperature were the methods Camargo, Hargreaves-Samani, Klarrufa and Linacre. It is concluded that the best method for estimating ETo based on air temperature in the region of AquidauanaMS is the Hargreaves-Samani.
