ResumoThe Hakluyt Society was founded in 1847 at the suggestion of W. Desborough Cooley under the Presidency of Sir Roderick Murchison, with the object of printing and circulating to members, 'rare and valuable voyages, travels and geographical records'. Its work was in tune with the spirit ofthe time which inspired many Learned Societies, and close links were kept up with the RGS, especially through Murchison, and later through Sir Clements Markham, Hon. See, from 1859 to 1887 and President from 1889 to 1909. Relations have also been maintained with the British
