Resumo

As evidenced by the controversy surrounding Andres Serrano's 1987 photograph Piss Christ, scatological imagery, especially when combined with the sacred emblems of religion, can still provoke and offend. Even though Serrano's juxtaposition of crucifix and urine referred to the artist's personal examination of his religious beliefs and was intended as a critique of the commercialization of religion, this immersion of the sacred in the profane only confirmed the belief among some fundamentalist groups that the contemporary artistic avant-garde was corrupt and obscene.
