Resumo

social representations are constantly changing; therefore it is important that they are targeted correctly.one way to disseminate it is through the media; thus, it is critical to understand the social representations contained in the sports newspapers, publishers of the paralympics Games.through content analysis, conducted at two national newspapers specialized in sport (o Jogo and record), of the years 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008, years of paralympics Games, we are able to figure out the social representations of these newspapers about the portuguese paralympics athletes. From a priori analysis emerged the following categories: terminology and stereotypes.our main conclusions are: the frequency of publication of news was regular, but not continuously; the terminology used to depict the paralympics athlete are mostly accurate and the portrayal of the athlete priority instead of their disability is also evident, especially in the publishing of the 2004 paralympics Games; the terminology within the news content is uneven in the sense that both emphasizes, correctly, the subject "paralympics", the athletes and the methods applied, and has an inconsistency in terminology, not using, yet often, the people First language; and the paralympics athlete is becoming less stereotypical in its representation.
