Resumo

Abstract A conference on “Democratization in the Iberian Peninsula and in Latin America,” sponsored by the Socialist International and organized by the Portuguese Socialist Party, was held in Lisbon, from Sept. 29 to Oct. 3, 1978. It was attended almost exclusively by political leaders of 33 countries from Europe and Latin America—including some well-known world figures. This conference represents the best organized effort so far by the Socialist International to confront the problems of Latin America and broaden its world-wide influence. The relevance of the subject can be seen by the presence of Willy Brandt, president of the Socialist International, Carlsomm, its general secretary, and leaders of national Socialist parties such as Mario Soares, Felipe Gonzales and Bettino Craxi.
