Insect-Plant Interactions and Control

Resumo

Cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) are hemimetabolous insects whose nymphs develop underground.Throughout its immature phase, the nymph remains intimately associated with a single host plant, where it feeds by sucking sap from the root. There are reports of cicada Quesada gigas causing severe losses to parica (Schizolobium parahyba var.amazonicum (Huber ex Ducke) Barneby, Fabaceae) plantations in the region between the states of Pará and Maranhão.However, the present study extends the area of association with the culture of parica by recording the occurrence of Q. gigas infesting plantations in the municipality of Guarantã do Norte, state of Mato Grosso. Thus, we suggest that further studies be carried out to determine the areas where the infestation of parica plantations by this pest occurs.
