ResumoAlthough the occurrence of celestite in Kansas was known as early as 1892 (Faiiyer and Bailey, 1893:78) in Garfield, Riley, Salina, Washington, Douglas, and Jefferson Counties and later in Brown, Chase and Wabaunsee Counties, no adequate descriptions of the celestite are extant. The Brown County celestite deposits are mentioned under localities in various textbooks on mineralogy but no descriptions of them are to be found until Schoewe (1938:288) in an abstract reported the discovery of two new localities in Brown County where hitherto only one was known. Schoewe also briefly described the celestite, its occurrence and its stratigraphic position in the Hamlin Shale of Permian age and pointed out that the Brown County celestite deposits differed from most other known occurrences in the United States in that at most other localities
