Abstract Traditionally, radical political projects used to come across the Atlantic for their last experiments well after their fortunes had been exhausted in the old continent. Throughout the 19th century, scores of Utopian dreams faded away in the interminable spaces of the American Midwest. But things have changed. Nowadays the opposite is the case. Given the present configuration of world powers, new ideas have to come to the United States before they can even consider a successful career: it is essential to at least neutralize the interventionist sectors of the American establishment. The Italian Communist Party has learned this important lesson all too well.
