Resumo

I left the woods for as good a reason as I went there. Perhaps it seemed to me that I had several more lives to live, and could not spare any more time for that one. On September 20, 1998, Baltimore Orioles infielder Cal Ripken, Jr. ended one of the most remarkable streaks in sports history. As the first out of the final home game of that season was recorded with Ripken sitting quietly on the bench, fans and players alike suddenly realized that Ripken's 17-year, 2,632 consecutive game streak had come to an end. Was he injured, or in a contract dispute, or simply at the end of his long career? None of the above. Ripken had taken himself out of the game simply because he wanted to end the streak on his own terms. Although I have chosen to end my streak as ISLE Book Review Editor at a mere 16 years, I do hope I might still receive consideration for induction into the Editing Hall of Fame.
