After obtaining his M.S. (1975) and Ph.D. (1980) degrees in Horticulture from The Royal Agricultural and Veterinary University, Copenhagen, Dr. Callesen held various posts between 1980 - 2006 at the Institute for Glasshouse Crops and the Institute of Pomology, DIAS, Aarslev, Denmark. From 1995-98, Ole was Head and, from 1998 - 2000, Research Director of the Department of Fruit and Vegetable Research, at DIAS. Then, from 2000-06, he became Research Director and, from 2007, Director of the Department of Horticulture, Aarhus University, Denmark. His 300 publications include his own research into the breeding and production of raspberry, strawberry, cherry, apple and pear crops for industry.Additional management roles have included: Member of the Governing Board of the Danish Institute of Plant and Soil Sciences; Chairman of the Nordic Association of Agricultural Scientists; Member of ISHS Council (since 2000); Member of the Board of the Nordic Gene Bank, and Chairman since 2006; Chairman of the Danish Plant Genetic Resources Advisory Board; Administrator of the EU INTERREG Project (since 2005) and Co-ordinator of the EU Integrated Research Project called ISAFRUIT (since 2006).
