Resumo

Xpand Nitric Oxide reactor is proposed to increase blood flow to skeletal muscles due to the effect of arginine to increase nitric oxide and vasodilation, but previous research has shown that caffeine and creatine cause vasoconstriction which would increase muscle re-oxygenation time. PURPOSE: Examine the influence of Xpand Nitric Oxide Reactor, L-arginine α-ketoglutarate and caffeine supplementation on re-oxygenation after exercise. METHODS: Nine recreationally active men (21±1.1yr) performed 3 sets of 20 repetitions of seated single-leg calf raise at 60% 1-RM with 3min rests. The same calf raise exercise was performed with each supplement: L-arginine α-ketoglutarate (Arginine), jet alert caffeine (Caffeine), Xpand Nitric Oxide Reactor (Xpand), and placebo. Soleus muscle re-oxygenation time was measured immediately post exercise using near infra-red spectroscopy. RESULTS: There were no significant differences (p=0.07) in muscle re-oxygenation half-times in minutes among Xpand (0.43±0.03), Arginine (0.34±0.02), Caffeine (0.45±0.05), and placebo (0.35±0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, our findings show that Xpand fails to improve muscle re-oxygenation during exercise.
