Satisfactory sampling and estimation of populations of the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) by use of the capture/mark/release and recapture (CMR) method (Kikkawa 1964; Tanton 1965) are difficult. Similar problems to those experienced with Apodemus were encountered with populations of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). Despite these problems, useful information on the biology of the two species was obtained and is described in this paper.
