ResumoThe Botanical Garden of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a successor of the Prince's Botanical Garden which was founded in 1890. It became incorporated into the structure of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1947. Due to a number reasons—two moves, two designs, an area reductions as well as the lack of financial support, etc.—the Garden is still under construction. This collection of roses was started in the spring of 1992 with the planting of the 28 varieties of ornamental roses received from the Rose Institute in the town of Kazanluk. Currently the collection includes 100 varieties and is one of the richest public collections in Bulgaria. One third of the varieties in this collection belongs to the Thea Hybrida Group roses, then comes Floribunda Group but other major rose groups also are represented. Most samples have been obtained from manufactures and collectors and a small number through international exchange with other botanical gardens. The garden cultivates three Bulgarian varieties: GITA, TEODORA and oil-bearing ISKRA. Regular phenological observations are conducted on the collection.
