Resumo

Parvitaenia heardi sp. n. is described from the great blue heron, Ardea herodias, from South Carolina. Immature specimens were also found in a brown pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis carolinensis. The new species has 20 hooks in 2 circles; anterior hooks 200 to 210, posterior hooks 140 to 150 u long; and has 30 to 38 testes. Two mature tapeworms were found in a great blue heron, Ardea herodias L., and represent a species new to science. Two additional specimens were recovered from a brown pelican, Pelecanus occidentalis carolinensis Gmelin, but were not sexually mature even though they were as long as those from the heron. It is probable that the pelican is an unsuitable host for this species. The following description is based on these four worms, with internal measurements only from the two specimens from Ardea. The species is named in honor of Mr. Richard W. Heard, who has made major contributions to our knowledge of the parasite fauna of the southeastern United States. All measurements are in microns unless otherwise stated. Parvitaenia heardi sp. n. (Figs. 1-6)
