UBVRI surface photometry of the barred spiral NGC 7479

Resumo

This paper presents photographic surface photometry of the barred spiral NGC 7479 in U, B, V, R and I passbands. Well-defined disc, bar and nuclear bulge components are identified which contribute 16 ± 5, 40 ± 5 and 24 ± 7 per cent of the total flux respectively. The remaining contribution comes from the spiral arms and from a plateau region of approximately constant surface brightness which is seen between the bar and the western spiral arm. The exponential disc only occurs outside the central parts of the galaxy containing the bar and spiral arms. The bar has an exponential profile along its length and a Gaussian profile on perpendicular cross-sections. Its colour and mass-to-light ratio are consistent with a mixture of globular cluster and K dwarf stars. The shape and luminosity profiles of the bar resemble Miller & Smith's N-body simulation suggesting, with other observations, that the bar is a solid body, in contrast to galaxies such as NGC 613 and 1300 whose bars are believed to be primarily density wave features. Comparisons with other galaxies suggest that NGC 7479 is a giant galaxy, and that the plateau may be a common feature of all barred systems.
