ResumoHE theme of vocation is an important one in the works or Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui. It is central in his first long novel, iAy estos hijos! (1943), and in one of his most recent, El premio (1961). It reappears here and there in the many works written in between. This is no accident. It is part and parcel of Zunzunegui's theory of the novel: . el verdadero novelista tiene algo de gran misico sinf6nico, y los temas van y vienen por sus novelas una y otra vez como las grandes olas en la mar, con oceanica repetici6n.l The question which I should like to examine in these notes is whether or not this is a purely personal theme in Zunzunegui, or whether it has literary sources. We cannot doubt that in the vast flota of this most prolific writer there is much that is autobiographical. Zunzunegui himself, in writing of iAy estos hijos!, the first novela de gran tonelaje and one which shall concern us here, says: mi novela m6s autobiogr, fica. Tiene mucho de mi infancia y juventud. ... Es de mis libros mas entranables.2
