Resumo

This article focuses on the main characteristics of Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro , the first institutional newspaper to circulate in Brazil, highlighting its structural characteristics as well its signification during the John VI’s period in the land, in relation to the rooting of the printed word and of reading in the public universe between the years 1808 and 1821. It aims to evaluate the importance of this newspaper as a milestone in the history of the Brazilian press, showing that the values of both the great contemporary press and the journalistic profession were already in gestation at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
