ResumoAnalyses were made with the catch data concerning the kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus, fisheries along the Buzen District, Fukuoka, in order to derive a method for separating the variation in catch per unit effort (CPUE), which has been frequently used as an index of the standing crop of exploited population, to the components of the standing crop and others as reasonably as possible. Because the variations in CPUE on a short time scale seemed to follow log-normal distributions, assuming the daily change in the standing crop to be smooth to a considerable degree, a log transformed index of the standing crop was expressed by the moving average of log CPUE of 2T+1. A spectral analysis on log CPUE gave 2 2-days as an estimate of T since the spectral densities calculated for each fishery were variable and complicated in the frequency range above 0.2 2-day-1 every year from 1974 to 1978.
