ResumoIn this study, the authors used protrusive condylar path tracings to indicate the relative prominence (or steepness) of TMJ articular eminences in 29 joints with anteriorly displaced disks with reduction (Group 1), and in 326 normal joints (Group 2). The average protrusive condylar path for Group 1 was 63.1° as compared with 50° for Group 2 (significant at the 1% level). In addition, for 13 subjects with unilaterally displaced disks, the average condylar path of the involved joints was 64.1°, compared to 49.1° for the uninvolved joints (significant at the 1% level). The authors speculate that a prominent articular eminence may in conjunction with other factors, predispose a subject to internal derangement of the TMJ.
